CE Credits: 16

In the last 40 years, dentistry has benefited from many advances in adhesives, composites, and ceramics that have allowed the profession to transition from mechanical restorative goals to biologic ones. These materials provide clinicians with the ability to restore teeth in a minimally invasive manner, close to their original biomechanical function. Unfortunately, these materials are not often used to their full potential and are employed with only slight variations to more invasive traditional preparation designs.

Why Choose Direct Composite Restorations?

Direct composites allow for the most minimally invasive restorative treatment: only the decayed and/or damaged tissue is removed. Direct composites can last and serve patients for decades, as supported by published evidence. However, many dentists face early failures such as fractures, leakage, post-operative sensitivity, pulpal failure, recurrent caries, and marginal staining. In fact, dental insurance expectations are that direct composite restorations last only 2 years. In this course, Dr. Schiffenhaus will review advanced adhesive techniques, material science, biomechanics, diagnosis, and preparation design to ensure that minimally invasive direct composite restorations can last long-term.

Course Format This course provides both didactic and hands-on training. To allocate more time for hands-on training during the live course, many didactic lectures have been moved online, which can be watched before and up to 6 months after the course. Therefore, the “total CE” for the course includes both online and in-person coursework.

Course Objectives

Learn the BAARD Approach to Restorative Dentistry

Understand indications for direct composites and evidence behind decades of longevity

Grasp important principles of Engineering, Biomechanics, Tooth Structure, and Restorative Materials

Material Selection for long-lasting composite restorations, including Fiber Reinforced Composites

Learn proper adhesive protocols to eliminate post-operative sensitivity and improve pulpal outcomes for deep restorations

Learn ceramic preparation fundamentals and the BAARD Overlay & Onlay Preparation Protocol (Hands-On Training)

Understand Deep Caries Removal: evidence and workflows, and why Liners & Bases are detrimental to your restorations

Learn how to successfully and easily place rubber dams to improve outcomes and reduce stress during adhesive procedures

Hands-On training for posterior and anterior direct composites: Class I, Class II, Class III, and Class IV Composites, as well as Rubber Dam Placement

Techniques Learned in This Course

Cavity Preparation Design

Design cavity preparations for various defects and damage to optimize placement and longevity of direct composites.

Advanced Adhesive Techniques

Create long-lasting bonds to dentin to prevent leakage, gap formation, post-operative sensitivity, pulpal failure, and/or fracture of composite restorations.

Rubber Dam Isolation

Place rubber dams easily and predictably to simplify procedures and decrease stress, maximizing results.
